Many primary care Physicians don’t know what a Physiatrist is. All to often they send patients to multiple specialists, who preform unnecessary lab test and never get to the root of the problem. A Physiatrist is a highly trained medical doctor specializing in diagnosing symptoms of pain. According to AAPM&R majority of those patients could have avoided surgery altogether had they sought a PM&R Physician first.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)
Medical Doctors who complete a four year specialty in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) are known as a Physiatrists (fizz i' a-trists). There are less than 10,000 board certified Physiatrists in the United States. This specialty of medicine touches upon all major systems of the body and crosses many different disciplinary lines, including Musculoskeletal, Pulmonary, and Neurological system.
